Registered Nursing (RN) requires a large knowledge base used to assess and coordinate patient care, and educate patients in a way that promotes good health, prevents disease, and helps patients cope with their medical problems. Additionally, RNs provide guidance and emotional support to patients and their family members throughout their treatment.
RN Job Description
On a day-to-day basis, registered nurses typically record patients’ medical histories and symptoms, help perform tests and analyze results, consult with doctors and other healthcare professionals, observe patients, administer medication and other treatments, operate and monitor medical equipment and teach patients and their families how to manage their illnesses or injuries, among other tasks.
Some RNs even oversee licensed practical nurses, nursing aides, and home care aides. Some may work to promote general health by educating the public; they may organize general health screenings or clinics, blood drives, or other public health outreach programs.
Registered nurses can work in a variety of environments: hospitals, physician’s offices, home healthcare services, and nursing homes. Additionally, RNs may also work in correctional facilities, summer camps, schools and with the military.
